14th Salsa Challenge cancelled due to smoke

Due to the unprecedented poor air quality that Kamloops has experienced recently due to regional wildfire activity, the team at Open Door Group’s Gardengate Horticulture Program have decided it is in the best interests of attendees to cancel this year’s 14th Annual Salsa Challenge.

This was not an easy decision to make, but due to the unpredictability of the weather and air quality in our region, we find it too risky to hold the event. We are saddened to announce the cancellation, but we feel it is in the best interest of staff, volunteers and attendees.

Sorry for any inconvenience this might cause, and we look forward to hosting the Salsa Challenge again next year.

Produce On Wheels begins July 5

Open Door Group’s Garden Horticulture Program launches its annual Produce On Wheels campaign next week, with a new person at the helm.

Summer student Katie Hawker will oversee deliveries of produce to 12 clients from six community agencies starting July 5. Deliveries will be made every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon throughout the summer.

The idea, she said, is to deliver to those who have barriers to accessing organic produce, be they physical or financial. Included with the deliveries are recipes related to the organic produce being delivered.

“I think this is a great program,” said Hawker, who heads into her final year of Social Work at Thompson Rivers University this fall.

Kamloops Immigrant Services, Canadian Mental Health Association, Kamloops Brain Injury Association, Henry Leland House, Family Tree Family Centre and Kamloops Elizabeth Fry Society’s Stepping Stones program provide 12 clients each, for a total of 36.

“They know their clients best,” said Hawker.

Hawker is also in charge of the popular Salsa Challenge, which takes place at Gardengate’s 915 Southill St. location in Brocklehurst on Aug. 18. The event sees various community agencies square off as they try and make the best salsa from organic produce grown at Gardengate.

“There’s usually 200 to 400 people here (for the salsa challenge),” she said.

Gardengate is an innovative horticulture project that promotes healthy eating and active living for persons with disabilities. Hawker said it’s not a clinical experience for clients. Instead, they work outside and learn new skills like weeding and harvesting.

“It’s a really inclusive place,” she said.

National Aboriginal/Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, June 21, was National Aboriginal Day in Canada, now called National Indigenous Peoples Day. Celebrations took place in Kamloops at Riverside Park and the Kamloopa Pow Wow grounds.

Open Door Group staff took part in the event, operating a booth in Riverside Park. We met a lot of awesome people, handed out free swag (those Open Door Group pens sure are popular) and registered some clients for our services.

Suffice to say, we had a lot of fun 🙂

Big thanks to organizers for putting together such a great community event. We were proud to a be part of it!

Three Resume Mistakes To Avoid

In a competitive job market, a nice, polished resume is more important now than ever. Below are three common resume mistakes job seekers want to avoid:

Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and typos: this is a resume killer, and the No. 1 reason an employer won’t follow up with you for an interview. Spell check, proof read, and get someone you trust to check your resume for mistakes.

Not including keywords that match the job posting: remember, the day of the one-size-fits-all resume is over. Your resume should include the same keywords that appear in a job posting. If it doesn’t, there’s a good chance you won’t appear to be a good fit for the job.

Submitting incorrect information: including a wrong phone number or email address, or messing up a job title or date, makes your resume look haphazard. Make sure everything is correct before submitting the resume. There’s a good chance the incorrect information will come out eventually.
